Top Questions About Social Security Benefits

Here are the most frequently asked questions about Social Security benefits and payments:

What if I don’t receive my check on the expected date?

If your check doesn’t arrive on the expected date, the Social Security Administration advises waiting three additional mailing days before reaching out.

If you still haven’t received it, contact a representative at 800-772-1213.

Remember that wait times are shorter on weekdays and between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Is Social Security Going Bankrupt?

Social Security is not going to go bankrupt, but it does face funding challenges.

Social Security is primarily funded through a dedicated payroll tax, and as long as workers and employers continue to pay these taxes, benefit payments will continue.

The program also receives funding from income taxes paid on a portion of the benefits.

Claims that Social Security will go bankrupt are false because the program always receives income from taxes.

However, the program’s trust fund reserves could be depleted within the next decade, which could lead to lower benefit payments in the future.

The costs of Social Security are increasing as more baby boomers retire and collect benefits.

If Congress does not take action, the trust funds will eventually run out of cash reserves, resulting in reduced benefit payments.

The Old-Age Survivors Insurance (OASI) Trust Fund is projected to be able to pay full benefits until 2033, after which it may only be able to pay out 77% of scheduled benefits.

The Disability Insurance (DI) Trust Fund, on the other hand, is expected to make full benefit payments through 2097.

Are social security survivor benefits for children considered taxable income?

Social Security survivor benefits for children can be taxable.

However, typically the additional income they receive isn’t enough to make their benefits taxable.

The taxability depends on the income of the person entitled to the benefits.

If both the child and the parent receive benefits, their taxability should be calculated separately.

If the child’s total income, including half of their social security benefits, exceeds the base amount for their filing status, a portion of their benefits may be taxable.

Detailed instructions for calculating the taxable amount can be found in the IRS publications.
